Songs That Remind Me of Percy Jackson

pjoseries

Hello, friends! Today is a very important and exciting day: it’s Percy’s birthday! In like, real life time he is now in his late twenties but in the actual Riordanverse he is still like seventeen so we’ll go with that just because the concept freaks me out less.

I’ve talked before about how I have a very bad (or good?) habit of associating songs with books. When it comes to Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus, I associate so many songs with these books and characters it is kind of a problem. However, since it is Percy’s birthday I will do my best to just talk about songs that remind me of him or his relationship with other characters (*cough* Annabeth *cough*) or just the original series and it’s vibe in general. Basically, I’m leaving out the songs that remind me of the Heroes of Olympus crew. That’s really it.

Also, it goes without saying that every song from The Lightning Thief musical goes on this list. However, I felt like I didn’t need to list every single song from the Percy Jackson musical here. Also, if you don’t know what this musical is yet a) I’m kind of hurt and b) I wrote a whole post about that here that you should check out.

Anyways, here are the songs!

How Far We’ve Come by Matchbox Twenty

“I’m waking up at the start of the end of the world,
But it’s feeling just like every other morning before,
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it’s gone,”

In my mind, this is like the Percy Jackson song and I couldn’t imagine putting any other song first on this list. I don’t know if anyone else just strongly associates this song with this series but I know I do, both due to the fact that it really fits this series well and the fact that right before Blood of Olympus came out everyone started making edits with these lyrics.

Riptide by Vance Joy

“Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side”

This song doesn’t necessarily scream Percy or anything, but it is called Riptide and mentions the ocean and running away and New York city so my brain automatically associates it with this series.

The Kids Aren’t Alright by Fall Out Boy

“And with the black banners raised as the crooked smiles fade
Former heroes who quit too late
Just wanna fill up the trophy case again”

I know that people associate this song with a lot of different series for a lot of different reasons, but in my mind this will always first be associated with Percy Jackson due to the lyrics above. They just relate too well to the demigods fighting at the end of The Last Olympian.

I’ll Fight by Daughtry

“But if you ever fall down straight to the bottom
And you can’t get back where you started
Any place any time
You gotta know for you I’ll fight”

This song is basically just Percy @ Annabeth but also all of his other friends because hello, loyalty is kind of his thing.

Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat

“I’m lucky I’m in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again”

This is like, the Percabeth song. Just saying.

Superheroes by The Script

“When you’ve been fighting for it all your life
You’ve been struggling to make things right
That’s how a superhero learns to fly
Every day, every hour, turn the pain into power”

Once again, this doesn’t necessarily just fit Percy but pretty much all of the demigods at the end of The Last Olympian. Ask me how emo I am over The Last Olympian one day, that could be fun.

Children of a Miracle by Don Diablo and Marnik

“We’re shadows in the moonlight
Empires will fall, will fall, will fall before midnight
We are the children of a miracle, miracle”

I don’t know how I found this song, but it is very PJO-esque. More so Heroes of Olympus, but I’m still putting it on here because it also fits the end of this series.

Mama Said by Lukas Graham

“Mama said that is was okay
Mama said that it was quite alright
Mama told us that we were good kids”

This song gives me so many feelings concerning Percy and Sally. Like, so many. Please listen to this song.

Young Volcanoes by Fall Out Boy

“Tonight, the foxes hunt the hounds
It’s all over now
Before it has begun
We’ve already won”

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes

“I’m gonna fight ’em all
A seven nation army couldn’t hold me back
They’re gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back”

Listen, it is canon that Percy listens to The White Stripes and this is so him, especially in The Last Olympian. It just had to be on this list, there were no other options to be honest.

Run Boy Run by Woodkid

“Run boy run! This ride is a journey to
Run boy run! The secret inside of you
Run boy run! This race is a prophecy
Run boy run! And disappear in the trees”

This song could be playing in the background at so many points during this series it isn’t even funny, but the mention of a prophecy always makes my brain go !!!! Percy Jackson!! so therefore it is on this list.

It’s Time by Imagine Dragons

“It’s time to begin, isn’t it?
I get a little bit bigger but then I’ll admit
I’m just the same as I was”

You know the scene at the beginning of The Last Olympian where Beckendorf comes to get Percy from that back road where Paul is teaching Percy how to drive? This song could be playing in the background during that scene. It sure is in my head, at least.

Broken Crown by Mumford and Sons

“Crawl on my belly til the sun goes down
I’ll never wear your broken crown”

This song is just playing in the background of my mind whenever Luke or Kronos or whoever tries to get Percy to switch sides. But it also plays whenever Percy tries to reject his destiny or the prophecy in general during the early books.

This is War by Thirty Seconds to Mars

“To the right to the left
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth,
It’s a brave new world from the last to the first”

Once again, this song reminds me of The Last Olympian. I didn’t realize just how many songs did until I started writing this post, but that is okay I guess.

I Do This by Abstract

“I do this for my father
Who’ve I’ve only seen
From time to time in my dreams
I do this for, you
I do this for my mother”

I only discovered this song recently and it is not one that I will likely listen to often, but as soon as I looked up the lyrics I knew it fit Percy perfectly. He has done so many things just out of obligation or because he cares about other people and this song is all about that.

Okay, believe it or not this is not all of the songs I associate with Percy or this series, but I feel like this is already a long list so I’ll stop here. One day I’ll do a post all about how much Percy and this series mean to me, but today is not that day. For now, maybe just go listen to a few of these songs and celebrate Percy’s birthday by eating some blue food.

  2. Today is such a bittersweet day for me. I’m happy it’s Percy’s birthday – hello, childhood hero – but I’m also realizing how old he is and I want to cry. I love love love all of the songs you’ve compiled and I KNOW I’m going to be listening to some of them for the next few days. I’d never heard of Seven Nation Army or I Do This before this post, but oh my God, they sound like they fit him perfectly.

Thank you for taking the time to put this list together Arin! I love this post more than words can express!

    1. Thank you so so much, Surina!! Percy is also one of my childhood heroes, I am so so proud of him and all he has accomplished but also I cannot picture him as any older than seventeen so its very weird. Seven Nation Army always makes me think of Percy, it is like his song in my mind lol.

  3. This is so interesting, because I also have songs I associate with Percy Jackson! My reason is a bit different than yours: I read PJO for the first time back in 2011, and my favorite artist at the time was Owl City. His newest album had just been released, and I wanted to listen to it while reading, so now the whole album always reminds me of specific scenes from Percy Jackson!

Lucky is most definitely a Percabeth song, and whenever I hear It’s Time, I always think of all the final battle scenes! And I think my immediate reaction to hearing Riptide was to think of Percy! I haven’t heard some of these other songs, but I’m excited to try them out on my next PJO read! 😉 Awesome post, Arin!

    1. Thank you so much!! I love how you associate Owl City with PJO! There is one song of his that reminds me of the series but I cannot seem to think of it right now. I am glad someone else thinks Lucky is a Percabeth song, I just think it is them to a tee pretty much.
