Hello, friends! I wasn’t planning on doing this Top Ten Tuesday because I had no idea which settings I would like to see more from, but, after a while, I decided I would just go for it. These settings may be overly present in books all ready, but I just need to find more of them and read them. This may not be like, a call for these settings like it is supposed to, but it is a call for me to actually read books with these settings. Anyways, onto the actual post.
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
I. Small towns!
This picture was found from here. I live in a small town and I have always wanted to see more small town settings in books and movies. The one I always think of is Gilmore Girls, as Stars Hollow is somewhat similar to my own town other than the fact that I live in the south and it is supposedly in Connecticut. I feel like some of the books I have read set in small towns are just nothing like mine, which isn’t bad, but it always makes me kind of disappointed because I always get my hopes up.
II. Lakes
This picture was taken by me on vacation four years ago, those figures in the distance are my oldest cousin and my younger brother. I have never been a beach person despite my families many vacations to the beach when I was younger, but I have always enjoyed going to a lakes. Lakes are somehow more peaceful than beaches, there is also somewhat less sand that sticks everywhere. I just want to read some summer contemporaries that take place lakeside and are just somewhat peaceful, it is all I want. I am also planning on writing one eventually, so there is that.
III. The south in general
The fun informational image was found here. I’ve spoken a few times about how growing up in the south has affected me, mainly in terms of my sexuality, but I honestly can’t imagine myself living elsewhere. Despite all of the problems with the south and some aspects of southern culture, I do like it. I like how most people have an emphasis on family, I love the food, and I think I have a minor sweet tea addiction. I would like to read more books set in the south to read how others interpret southern culture and how it affects the plot, I just think it would be cool.
IV. Virginia specifically
If you didn’t know, I live in Virginia. I feel like I have read a few books that are set in or just mention Virginia, but there is something cool about reading a book that is set where I live. Like, sometimes I can recognize the places mentioned (sometimes I have even been to them, which is like, really cool) and that is really fun. It also means I can picture everything more vividly in my mind (I live exactly where The Raven Cycle is set and I love rereading it because of how clearly I picture the setting) and I love that.
V. Space
This image comes from here and I think it is really cute. I know that there are tons of books set in space all ready, but most of them are really intense sci-fi and I can’t handle that. I want some books set in space that are easy for me to comprehend, that is all I ask.
VI. Boarding schools
I put House of Anubis as the picture for this because I blame it for the reason I am obsessed with boarding schools. This show made them seem so cool, even with all of the mysteries and weird things. I would have never been able to survive at a boarding school because I am far too dependent on my mom, but I like to think that I could have when I read about books set in boarding school.
VII. Colleges!!
This is a picture of the University of Virginia because why not, which I found here. This is basically just a call for more new adult books set in college to like, exist. There is so much to be written about concerning college, I really want some of those stories to be told.
VIII. Under the sea
This section of the post is just a call for more mermaid books, but it is also the reason Kiss The Girl from The Little Mermaid is now stuck in my head. I originally had this section titled “the ocean” but I thought people might think I meant the beach but I actually mean in the ocean. Give me more books about mermaids chilling around under the sea. I want them, I will read them.
IX. Travelling
This image comes from here. I want to read some books that have changing settings as the person is like traveling around. It doesn’t have to be Europe, it could be anywhere, I just want to read some road trip (or flying trips, I guess that is what those would be called) books.
X. The desert
I was originally going to leave this list at nine because I couldn’t think of more settings I would like to read about, but then I randomly thought of Holes and was like, wow, I should read more books set in the desert. Not necessarily at a camp in the middle of nowhere in the desert like in Holes, but just in a desert like area.
Okay, that is the end of my somewhat random list of settings I’d like to see more of. But what about you, what settings are you dying to see more of in books? Let’s chat down in the comments!
Great list!! I love your choices. And definitely agree that we need more college set books 🙂

The desert would be a very interesting place to read about for sure.

Thank you so much! I love lakes a lot, and though deserts are like the opposite, I feel like they could be interesting to read about.

I would LOVE some college/university books! I’ve read so many HS books but I’m 23 and I just don’t relate anymore!

I feel that! I am only 18 (I started school a year early so I am going into my sophomore year of college) but I am already starting to feel like normal high school books are less relatable.

Under the sea, yes. If someone would please build an underwater colony, I’d head there today.

I agree with all of these, and this post just speaks to me. I would love to read more books set in Texas, but not in the stereotypical “howdy and yeehaw” kind of way, you know? I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, and everyone I know is not like that at all! 😂
The desert is also a setting I wish I could read more often. And although there are several college-setting books out there, I would still like more! I really like seeing different kinds of experiences.

I think it is really funny that you haven’t encountered any “howdy and yeehaw” people in Texas because I definitely have in Virginia lol. I wish there were more college set books! There are just so so many possibilities and I would like to read about them!

I agree with so many of these! I live in the desert (Arizona), so I tend to avoid those settings. Ha ha. I do love small-town settings, Southern settings, and boarding school settings. I almost used lake settings for my list as well, but I didn’t in the end, although I do love a lake setting.
Happy TTT!

Thank you! I just think Southern settings are really interesting because it is so interesting to see what aspects of the culture authors choose to highlight and whatnot. Lakes are also just super cool, I’d like to see more of them lol.

Ya girl also has a huge sweet tea addiction so I feel called out 😅 I live in Louisiana and while there are more than a fair share of paranormal books set in New Orleans, I’m just really over it at this point.
I 100% agree about the colleges setting! I love YA characters but I need a character that’s actually on my level that I can relate to.
For the under the sea setting, I’m not sure if you’ve read it, but I HIGHLY recommend To Kill a Kingdom! Daughter of the Pirate King is fun too but doesn’t really get into the underwater aspects until the second book.

ok this post was so delightfully random I LOVE IT. yes, please, more mermaid books! but i want less cliched ones where the mermaid just falls in love with the first man she sees. i guess I just want more brutal mermaids haha. I also love desert settings. I really don’t think I would survive in one, but I always think that it’s so cool to see how people would adapt to the climate. I would love to go to boarding school because I would love to be independent and all that, but at the same time I am really irresponsible and would probably die if it were a murder mystery set in a boarding school kinda thing so yeah… lmao. also this comment is sooo long already, but I would love more books set in the south! I don’t know a lot about American geography but i would love to know more about the south in particular!

I feel like as I was writing it, I didn’t realize how random my choices where then at the end I was like ? lol. I agree, I want more mermaid ones where the mermaid is just chill about being a mermaid and does mermaid things. I would have suffered at boarding school, so it is a good thing I never went to one, but they are still cool to think about. The American south is a lot, to say the least, but at the same time for me its home so it is comforting (sometimes) lol.

I mean, if someone wrote a small lakeside town in the south, that would be amazing.

For books set in Virginia, you could try the Meg Langslow mystery series by Donna Andrews. They mostly have bird-themed puns in the titles: We’ll Always Have Parrots, Swan for the Money, The Finch Who Stole Christmas, etc.
