Hello, friends!! I am back for another Top 5 Wednesday! I have been enjoying these a whole lot, I really wish I had decided to do these sooner, but at least I decided to start them now! Today’s topic is favorite “unlikable” protagonists, which is honestly perfect for me because I always feel like I love all of the characters that others hate or find annoying, it is kind of my thing. You ever see a female character who is hated by a lot of people if not almost everyone? There is a good chance she is my favorite from the book or series. Anyways, today’s post is focusing on characters that others tear down, but I always found myself pulling for.
Top 5 Wednesdays come from a Goodreads group dedicated to creating prompts for bloggers/youtubers/other things maybe. The group is currently on hiatus for the summer, but the host encouraged people to look back upon older prompts. I had planned to just do the prompts from each past year for each month (like June 2019 would use June 2018 prompts), but I have decided that I am going to let myself chose my favorite of several prompts. Today’s prompt is from June 2017.
*Before we jump into this post, I just want to say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion on characters and everything else. Sometimes (a good bit of the time), I get overly protective of characters and cannot imagine how people dislike them, but everyone and their opinions are valid.
I. Clary Fairchild from The Mortal Instruments
This masterpiece was done by Cassandra Jean! Hi, if you didn’t know, my name is Arin and Clarissa Adele Fairchild is my favorite fictional character of all time and I will defend her until my last day. Now that that’s out of the way, let me explain what I see as confusing. A lot of people hate her? They say that she is whiny or has no personality or is too immature or too self-obsessed. All of those complaints seem really wild to me. She is one of the kindest, compassionate, and caring characters I have ever read about. If she seems immature in the early books, it could be that she is fifteen? People also say she is whiny, mainly pointing at the first two books. Let’s just review her situation in the first two books for a second: her mother has been kidnapped, she is thrown into a world she didn’t even know existed, found out that she has essentially been lied to and manipulated her whole life, and doesn’t know how to help anyone. She has a right to be upset and complain a little, I think? I know that if my mom had been kidnapped I would just be sobbing the whole time, so everyone should be glad I’m not the main character.
Oh boy wow this is getting long so I am going to cut myself off before this post turns into an “Arin defends Clary Fairchild” essay because that is not what this is supposed to be.
II. America Singer from The Selection
Ah look, it is another fictional female character who is widely hated and complained about for being too whiny, indecisive, and immature. Hi, America, I love you and you’re doing great sweetie. On a more serious note, I don’t get why people hate on America so much. I really don’t get all of the 1 star reviews that say it is only because of how much they hate America. I just don’t get it. One of the biggest complaints is that she is indecisive, but like, once again, everyone should be lucky I am not the main character. I change my mind over the simplest things like five or six times before I finally make a decision and stick to it. If I had to decide who I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with? Oh boy. It would take me at least three years and 15,000 pro and con lists, America honestly decided really fast and I am so proud of her.
III. Nina Zenik from the Grishaverse
This is the official artwork done by Kevin Wada! Okay, I honestly have no idea where to start with Nina? People hate her? Wild concept. She has been through too much for people to constantly be hating on her and calling her irrelevant. Let her eat her waffles and just be a general badass in peace. I am struggling with what to say for this one because I don’t remember people’s specific complaints against her other than her POVs were boring, but I just can’t imagine that as a concept, and I refuse to go look for more specific complaints because I don’t want to rile myself up for no reason.
IV. Alina Starkov from the Grishaverse
This artwork is done by Rosa Gutierrez! Well, hello there, another character from the Grishaverse. Saint Alina herself. I can’t imagine hating on a character who is like, so epic they are called a saint, but I have issues imagining a lot of things. The most common complaint I have seen about Alina is that she has no personality, which I find odd. I am not going to pretend like I remember the original trilogy a lot, because I honestly don’t, but I do remember that Alina was one of my favorite characters. Like Nina, I can’t really refute this one that well, but like, I love Alina a whole lot.
V. Evan from With or Without You
I read this book a week ago and I cannot stop thinking about it. I just really connected to it and found it really comforting for reasons I cannot figure out. Because of that, I have been reading a bunch of reviews for this book trying to figure out if other people experienced that too. So far, I have found a good bit of hate for Evan. People have called his family unrealistic (I wish it was, but it is sadly realistic), said he is too perfect (..I can’t imagine this), or that he is too selfish (the boy flew to New York to help protect his best friend, but he is selfish? wild). I personally loved Evan, he was such a sweet and caring an artistic main character. He made mistakes, but he acknowledged that and tried to make up for it. I admire him a lot.
Welp, that is the end of another Top 5 Wednesday! I’m going to repeat that I tend to have some pretty strong opinions on some things (*cough* Clary Fairchild *cough*), but you are also entitled to your opinion and if it is different from mine, that is totally chill and valid. I would love to discuss things, as long as everyone does it civilly!
How about you guys, who is your favorite “unlikable” character? Let’s chat in the comments!
