I Did ReadbyZoe’s 24 Hour Readathon: Gratitude Edition

Hello, friends! Last Saturday was ReadbyZoe’s 24 Hour Readathon: Gratitude Edition. I got to participate in one of her readathons for the first time and I really enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the theme of gratitude, I loved getting to reread some of my favorite books and I love that at the end of this post I get an excuse to talk all about the books that I love and why I love them.

Now, without further ado, we can move onto all of the random snapchats and my log from the day.

Hour One: I went into this readathon with the plan of launching and getting somewhat far into my reread of the first three books in The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. However, around like 11:30 I had a crisis where I changed that plan and found all of the books I loved as a child and put their names in a cup to draw the names of books and go from there. The first (and only) thing I ended up drawing was the first short story in the Elementals series by Brigid Kemmerer, so I read that, which was 40 pages.

Hour Two: After my earlier crisis, I ended up drawing City of Bones anyways so I decided it was fate and I would just continue with the series throughout the day. That didn’t end up mattering as I only ended up reading City of Bones, but whatever. Anyways, I started and read 32 pages of City of Bones.

Hour Three: Got up to page 48, decided to go to bed because I was tired and also I had eaten Girl Scout cookies so I was feeling content.

Hour Four – Hour Nine: Sleeping, yay. We love sleeping.

Hour Ten: Got up, spent a half an hour just waking up and slowly becoming a human. Went downstairs with the intention of automatically getting in the shower, but spend 30 minutes talking to my mom instead. A lot had already happened in her life that morning and she needed to give me the tea about some of our family members, important stuff folks.

Hour Eleven: Got in the shower, read a chapter while I was in the shower. I then got out and got dressed (all that fun stuff) then read to page 70.

Hour Twelve: Got up to page 104 before I had to leave to go to a family lunch thing. But I got to take this fun picture of my dog refusing to look at me because he was mad we were leaving so that’s cool I guess.

Hour Thirteen – Fourteen: Family function, I managed to read 10 pages of the ebook on my phone in between my family pestering me about school and if I’ve decided what I want to do with my life yet. OH! Also, I got to hold my baby cousin. It was honestly the best part of my day, he’s super cute and he is getting to where he’ll actually look and try and “talk” to you, its amazing.

Hour Fifteen: Got to part two. Page 146.

Hour Sixteen: Got to page 180.

Hour Seventeen: I got up to page 216, I also played with my dog because he was sitting there looking at me like “um, hello, I am here. Love me.”

Hour Eighteen: I got up to page 285 then had a crisis where I realized how tired I was and wondered if it was too late for me to make a coffee.

Hour Nineteen: I would just like to point out that on Saturday all I wrote here was “none lol” so there is that. I spend this hour watching youtube and eating dinner.

Hour Twenty: I decided that I should be a responsible student and do my reading for class on Monday, so I read half of the play Helen by Euripides.

Hour Twenty-One: I read the rest of Helen, which totaled 47 pages.

Hour Twenty-Two: I finally got back into City of Bones and got up to page 327.

Hour Twenty-Three: I started to try and actually make myself just sit down and read without aimlessly walking around or contemplating my entire life so that I could actually finish this book before the readathon was over. Once I started to do that, I managed to actually read to page 401.

Hour Twenty-Four: I finished City of Bones! It took me way way way longer than I thought it would, but that’s totally okay. I know that I always forget that you can take your time and make sure you’re enjoying what you read during 24 hour readathons, but I can and for this one I did.

Okay, now that I’ve shared my log and all of my fun snapchats from the day, I’m going to share why I’m grateful for the books I read throughout the day.

Elemental by Brigid Kemmerer: This is the novella prequel to my favorite series of all time, it shows all of the main characters as kids or teenagers and you get to see what their life was like before they were orphaned. I don’t have as much love and attachment to this short story as I do the first book, but I will always appreciate any story that involves the Merrick brothers because without even knowing it they have helped me through so so much and rereading their books always makes me feel like I’m going home. I’ve reread this series an unknown amount of times, but I would estimate at least ten or eleven times. Whenever I get stressed out or sad I end up going back to these books because I know I can get lost in the story all over again even if it is for the twelfth time.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare: It is honestly hard for me to discuss and explain all that The Mortal Instruments has done for me. This series is the reason I joined book twitter and found myself being involved in this community instead of just lingering on the outskirts and ultimately the reason I started this blog. And this book is where it all began. I will be the first to admit that this book is by no means a masterpiece but it is the book that originally introduced me to Clary, Luke, Alec, Jace, Simon, and Izzy and for that I will always be extraordinarily grateful.

Helen by Euripides: Okay, I have no fun backstory or anything like that for this play given that it was assigned reading for my Greek Literature class but I did enjoy that I could actually understand what was happening during it, so I guess I’m grateful for that.

Okay, I think I’m done for the day. Did you participate in this readathon? What books or series are you grateful for? Let’s chat in the comments.

  1. I always love reading your readathon posts because they’re so amusing and also, lots of cute doggy pictures! I love that you’re so honest about your activities throughout the day. I’m terrified to participate in a marathon because I know I’d slack way too much, haha.
