Hi, friends! Today is a big day, in case you didn’t know. It’s Jace Wayland’s birthday! He turns 28 today, which is super hard to believe because in my mind he will always either be an angst filled teenager or the 21 year old who randomly pops up in The Dark Artifices. Either way, I hope him and Clary are happy with their multitude of children. I hope said children have figured out a way to surprise him with some cute craft, like maybe a mug that says “world’s best dad” or something. Moving right along to the point of this post, in honor of Jace’s birthday, I am going to be talking about my favorite quotes from each of the books in TMI. Given that technically every line to come out of Clary Fairchild’s mouth is a favorite quote, we could be here for a while, so I’ll just get on to the point.
For the record, I will avoiding all spoilery quotes. Sadly, this means I can’t bring up two quotes from City of Heavenly Fire that make me wanna sob my eyes out, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
“Clary, you’re an artist, like your mother. That means you see the world in ways other people don’t. It’s your gift, to see the beauty and the horror in ordinary things. It doesn’t make you crazy – just different. There’s nothing wrong with being different.”
Okay can I hear a shout out for the adoptive father of the year Luke Garroway? Anyways, I just like, love this quote? I mean its an interaction between Luke and Clary, which are ALWAYS my favorite, so that already gives it point, but there is just something else about it? I don’t know man, its just great.
“Hugo is a raven, and, as such, he knows many things. I, meanwhile, am Hodge Starkweather, a professor of history, and, as such, I do not know nearly enough.”
Okay, so fun fact, this is my favorite quote of the entire series. I know that probably sounds super weird, especially since its a Hodge quote, but I am a history major and relate to this quote on a personal level. I freaked the first time I read this quote in City of Bones.
“‘If you insist on disavowing that which is ugly about what you do,’ said Magnus, still looking at Alec, ‘you will never learn from your mistakes.'”
Magnus Bane calling out the Clave will forever be one of my favorite things. But, this also has a very important message and I support that. Everyone should listen to Magnus, he knows whats up.
“You cannot save others until you first save yourself.”
Um, I’m not gonna say much about this one? Its just an important quote.
“I told her how brave you’ve been. How she’d be proud of you. Her warrior daughter.”
Wow, did you hear that? That was the sound of my heart shattering into pieces. Also, please note this is already the second Luke quote and we’re only on book one. I love that man.
“If you really love something, you never try to keep it the way it is forever. You have to let it be free to change.”
This may be the one ideology originating from Jocelyn Fairchild that I support.
“As long as there was coffee in the world, how bad could things be?”
Sometimes I just use this quote to put things into perspective. Also, this was almost my senior quote in high school.
“When you love someone, you don’t have a choice. Love takes your choices away.”
If you all thought I’d get through a favorite TMI quotes post without one of Clary’s most iconic lines, you were obviously wrong.
“Fate is never fair. You are caught in a current much stronger than you are; struggle against it and you’ll drown not just yourself but those who try to save you. Swim with it and you’ll survive.”
Okay, so like, this quote is a lot and I fully acknowledge that. But I just like it? Cassandra Clare really needs to stop with all of these quotes that send important messages because they make posts like these really hard.
“Regret is such a pointless emotion, don’t you agree?”
Magnus Bane, forever coming through with the words of wisdom.
“The Clave thinks the wards will stand forever because they’ve stood for a thousand years. But so did Rome, till the barbarians came. Everything falls someday.”
Hi, I’m Arin and I almost immediately fall in love with any and all historical references, especially if they’re from the classical period.
“All he wanted was to not be afraid, and so he was afraid all the time.”
This quote always hurts me. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to, but it does.
“People aren’t born good or bad. Maybe they’re born with tendencies either way, but it’s the way you live your life that matters.”
This quote has always reminded me of that Sirius Black quote and you know what, I don’t mind.
“‘Weakness and corruption isn’t in the world,’ Clary snapped. ‘Its in the people. And it always will be. The world just needs good people to balance it out.'”
An important reminder in today’s society, especially in today’s political climate.
“‘Hearts are breakable,’ Isabelle said. ‘And I think even when you heal, you’re never what you were before.'”
Is this my first Isabelle quote? Wow, that honestly surprises me.
“The more you try to crush your true nature, the more it will control you. Be what you are. No one who really loves you will stop.”
I love Luke Garroway. Everyone should listen to Luke. He’s that friendly old man who is a dad to everyone and just wants what’s best for you and to make pancakes into fun shapes.
“You are not trivial.”
“You may have the worst timing since Napoleon decided the dead of winter was the right moment to invade Russia.”
Did I mention that I fall in love with historical references easily yet? Oh, I did? Also this quote just always makes me laugh.
“It was stupid to hope, she knew. But sometimes hope was all you had.”
Fun fact: I am a sucker for any and all quotes about hope. Don’t ask me why, but I am.
“I don’t think she doesn’t believe she can die. I think, just like you always did, she believes there are things worth dying for.”
Luke! Defending! Clary! We stan a father daughter pair.
City of Heavenly Fire
“We are all the pieces of what we remember. We hold in ourselves the hopes and fears of those who love us. As long as there is love and memory, there is no true loss.”
Wow, I love the man who said this. I’m not gonna state who that man was because spoilers, but what. a. man.
“‘Heroes aren’t always the ones who win,’ she said. ‘They’re the ones who lose, sometimes. But they keep fighting, they keep coming back. They don’t give up. That’s what makes them heroes.'”
Wow, look at my baby girl coming through with words of wisdom! I’m so proud of her!
“Because the world isn’t divided into the special and the ordinary. Everyone has the potential to be extra ordinary.”
I’m pretty sure I saw this quote on an inspirational instagram post earlier today? Weird. Maybe they were celebrating Jace’s birthday too.
“Family isn’t blood. It’s the people who love you. The people who have your back.”
I love a good found family.
“There will always be those who want to tell you who you are based on your name or the blood in your veins. Do not let other people decide who you are. Decide for yourself.”
Tessa Gray for President. Ah, what a beautiful quote.
Welp, we are finally done. If you made it this far, I’m so proud of you. Have you guys read TMI? If so, what’s your favorite quote? Are you also having a hard time believing Jace is 28 today? Let’s chat and or scream about anything TSC related in the comments.
