I Did a 24 Hour Readathon

Hey friends! Last Wednesday, January 2nd, I decided that I was going to attempt a 24 hour readathon in hopes of fixing my sleep schedule before I went back to college for short term. The original plan was to not sleep at all and try to read as much as possible with a goal of finishing at least for books. As you can see from the random notes I took on the hour every hour, that did not exactly work out, but I came pretty close and am proud of that.

Onto my log, and random snapchats, from throughout the day

Hour One: To kick off this readathon, I picked up A Very Large Expanse of Sea and got immediately hooked, reading the first 111 pages within the first hour.

Hour Two: I read a little while longer until I got to page 130, then took a break for about 20 minutes to check snapchat and all of those other fun social media things. Finished up the hour on page 194.

Hour Three: This hour I literally just sat and read until I finished AVLEOS at 2:50.

Hour Four: After finishing my first book, I took a little break and went downstairs to get some milk and sneak some snacks. Then, after I returned to the safety of my bedroom, I started Thicker Than Water at 3:15 as an ebook on my phone due to me not wanted my parents to see my light on and question my sleeping schedule. By the end of the hour, I had gotten about 40 pages, or 14%, in.

Hour Five: I basically read this entire hour, though since I was starting to actually get tired and slow down a bit, it only managed to be about another 40 pages, or 13% more

Hour Six: I kept on reading, trying to speed my pace a little bit. I did that pretty well, I read about another 80 pages, or about 25% more

Hour Seven: After deciding around 2 AM that not sleeping was not going to end up being an option, I had decided that this is when I would go to sleep and then wake up at 10 AM and keep on reading. I think we can all guess that did not end up occurring, since in this hour I read about another 60 pages, or about 18% more.

Hour Eight: This hour my only goal was to finish the book so I could sleep peacefully. I did that, finishing the last 100 pages of TTW at the very end of the hour.

Hour Nine – Ten: Sleeping, according to plan.

Hour Eleven: For the record, at this point I woke up for a total of ten minutes, then fell back asleep as soon as my mom went downstairs.

Hour Twelve – Fifteen: Sleeping, not in accordance with plan.

Hour Sixteen: I finally decided to wake up at this point, and after I got over my initial freak out that what I was attempting to do in order to fix my sleep schedule was just making it worse, I went downstairs and did a variety of activities. I read the first 30 pages of Letters to the Lost, helped my mom prep materials for some of her bulletin boards for work, played with Dozy, my beloved boxer pup (pictured below), and made some french fries and a cup of coffee.

Hour Seventeen: During this hour,  I ate the french fries that I made, continued to offer my mom color advice for her bulletin boards, and read 78 more pages.

Hour Eighteen: I felt the need to get up and take a break at this point, even though I hadn’t even really been reading, so I took a half an hour off before going back to read 68 more pages.

Hour Nineteen: This hour I unintentionally took a 20 minute break (I blame my phone, it was sitting right there, tempting me for no good reason), before reading 55 more pages.

Hour Twenty: At this point, I realized that I was running out of time and that LTTL was taking me far, far longer than it should have. So I forced myself to get motivated and read 135 pages while eating some really good pizza pasta.

Hour Twenty-One: I quickly finished LTTL, took a 30 minute break, then sat back down and started More Than We Can Tell and got exactly 30 pages in.

Hour Twenty-Two: I was starting to feel kind of burnt out at this point, so I goofed off a lot and only managed to read 55 pages.

Hour Twenty-Three: During this hour I somehow convinced myself that there was a chance I could finish this book before midnight, so I read 130 pages while eating some not so good, definitely freeze burned ice cream.

Hour Twenty-Four: During this hour I wised up to the fact that I was not going to finish MTWCT, so I slowed down in order to enjoy the book more, and read 85 pages.

Now I should probably wrap up all those books I read in 24 hours…

A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi: 5/5 stars! Super cute book, loved every minute of it.

Thicker Than Water by Brigid Kemmerer: 4/5 stars! Full review here.

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer: 5/5 stars! Full review to come (hopefully Sunday)

More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer: Predicted 5/5 stars, though I haven’t managed to finish it yet, whoops.

Whelp, that’s about it from me for today! Have you done a 24 hour readathon before? If so, how did it go for you? Also, if I were to do another one of these at some point in the future with a little more notice, would anyone be interested in joining me? Let’s chat in the comments!

  1. Uhm, WOW?! You’re literally amazing. I have no idea how you could possibly read so much in 24 hours (especially considering you managed to sneak some sleep in!). I’m blown away at your abilities, truly. I’ve wanted to try out a readathon but I just KNOW that I’ll get bored of it, being the lovely mood reader that I am, and would give up.

    You did awesome, seriously!

    1. Wow I have no idea how I’m just seeing this, but thank you so much! I have no idea how I read all that I did either, I feel like I spent the entire day goofing off and not reading. You should try out a readathon, if it goes horribly no one has to know but you 😉 (trust me, I’ve tried to do so many of these before and given up an hour or two in).

      1. You’re welcome! As much as you read, it’s hard to believe you slacked off at all! You must read insanely fast. I’m beyond jealous, haha. I’ve considered trying out my own secret readathon but I just haven’t committed to it yet. It would probably have to be a spur of the moment decision, honestly 😂
